LUCY SMALL & THE SURF GHANA PROJECT

Pro longboarder and activist Lucy Small has been a close friend of ours since almost the beginning of our beer-making journey. Lucy first made waves in 2021 when she drew attention to gender inequality in the prize money offered at a local Sydney surf comp. Since then, Lucy has become a legend in the surfing industry, campaigning for equal pay for female athletes in all sports.

In 2022 Lucy approached us to support a trip to Ghana to make a film about a pioneering group of female surfers and skaters. These women and girls are part of a project called Surf Ghana, breaking through social barriers and norms to spend time learning and growing in the ocean and the skatepark, and contributing to an emerging boardsports industry in Ghana.

The film is a story of joy that challenges Western stereotypes of a narrow culture defined by poverty, showcasing creativity, strength and innovation among a group of legendary Ghanaian surfers and skateboarders.

We're stoked to continue to support Normal Friend Lucy Small and her fight to achieve gender equality in sport.

The film is set to premiere on March 28 at the Randwick Ritz, Eora, with a Q&A with Lucy on its making.
